5/13 + 5/14 Rehearsal Notes

OVERALL NOTES
  • Keep energy up throughout the show, it fell at the end
  • NO NEGATIVE TALK (of the show, writing, acting, directing, choices being made - Just don’t! If you’re being mean to a show because you aren’t happy with your own work, don’t forget that you’re also being mean to the work of everyone else involved - which is a lot of people)
  • Stay in your light
  • Tighten up transitions
  • Be nice to each other! We’re all very tired and stressed and we’re very sorry if our words are not nice, we love each and every one of you. Be patient and kind with each other!
  • Look at your scripts again to make sure you’ve been practicing your lines correctly
Shut
  • This is one to tighten up
  • Guys we need this one to go faster. The longest part right now is the lines. We gotta go FAST!
  • Don’t hold the HA! At the end for so long.
In Idaho
  • Just don’t break
Nothing Changes
  • Kyton, really good direction of focus
  • Make sure not to break
  • We can tighten up the “questioning” parts
  • Loosen up a little. You guys got this! It’s one of the most powerful shows and you guys are doing great.
2 Snakes
  • Aaron, try not to be in front of the “action”
  • Snakes, try to be moving
Drive me home
  • Quicker shifts
  • LESS NEGATIVE TALK
Millard
  • This is one to speed up
  • Maddie good facial expressions
  • Don’t cover fish bowls with your hands.
  • Speed Up!!! This whole show needs to be sped up, making the longer parts funnier.
  • Also speed up combat
Oblivion
  • Daltry, more “heartbeat - like” at the top, instead of just tapping, really let us know its a heartbeat. Heartbeat sounds
  • Remember - Slow down the heartbeat at the top, then speed it up when you know she’s there
  • Maddie, when you say you and boy, don’t make it so obvious you don’t like boy, just get excited when she says no. Make it come across as if you're just trying to “get to know her”
  • Remember when you say “Well I am a lesbian” that this is not/has not always been obvious to you. This is the first time you are saying the word to describe yourself. This is a moment of truth & self discovery.
Soulja Board
  • Make ritual more ritualistic
Falling Apart
  • Remember to make your noises
  • Make sure the line is in sync
  • Make sure you know the line!
  • SL side split at the end
Last Boyfriend
  • Build more
  • Work on the beginning, it sounds less confident than the rest of the piece
Wasteland
  • More narrative at the beginning, then let us see your alliance
  • Lines!
It’s Fine
  • We can speed this guy up
  • I liked the push on stand for us, Kyton, let that push get you to standing
  • Ainsley try to be less stompy when kyton is pushing you
  • Kyton, don’t be afraid to UNLEASH THE ANGER!
Absentia
  • Keep your voices up - Aaron work on separating words/enunciating
  • Tighten up transitions
Fog Over Water
  • VOICES UP, ENUNCIATE the plot of this show is based on the words you say and the audience needs to understand them
  • Don’t forget to vary your intonation and clarify your change in tactic to keep people watching
  • This is absolutely one of the shows that can tighten up a lot. Limit the pauses and jump on your cues (especially if you need to cut the other off). I would say that you can speed up your actual lines, but don’t if it messes with your diction. A high energy level and jumping on cues should do the job
  • Eli turn to Aaron on “There’s a painting”
Giant Burger Time
  • Good job today, just remember to be watching for the lasers on the other person’s chest
  • Sit up SUPER FAST and SUPER STRAIGHT and open your eyes SUPER WIDE. we’ve been able to recognize your fear but there can be so much more
Help! I Don’t Have Gills!
  • Practice BREATHING THROUGH YOUR NOSE
He Just Doesn’t Want to Talk
  • Jackson can this start closer to the end?
  • Kyton make your frustration mega-clear, especially in the last one. Also pick up your voice and stance for veganism line - this is a speech
  • Aaron and Eli don’t break and keep your faces neutral
A Healthy, Compatible Relationship
  • The beginning felt a little short today but honestly that’s better for the total show time, just make sure you get all your actions in
Love Hooligan
  • You know it!
  • Avoid stepping out of your light for any period of time. It's pretty broad so you can keep all the original blocking, just don’t get super close to the audience for more than a second
Musical
  • Maddie find your light
  • Sing all the way through “I’m only going to be here for one night”
Safely Rest
  • REALLY good intensity. I was scared. Just make sure not to lose it as the show goes on. Only build
The Screaming Need for Coffee
  • Abby I loved how you delivered your house in the hills line but I lost it when you moved behind Max while you were still talking. Say the entirety of each of those two lines on either side
Steve Jobs’ Last Job
  • I can’t believe I’m saying this but Ainsley tone down your Wozniak line. Stay closer to nerd and farther from Igor
  • Don’t break!
Tragedy of Cero
  • Don’t anticipate getting knife props - you won’t
  • Abby and Eli don’t get too goofy on the handshake but keep the noises. If you can speed that up that would be awesome. Also shorten the pause afterwards
  • Jump on each other’s lines. This show can speed up very much
  • Max don’t do the jump stab thing
  • Abby and Max each only stab Cero three times
  • Abby and Taegan dance bigger
Uplifting

  • Just pay attention to your light now that we have it EXCEPT don't forget to step into the aisle on “gorgeous”

Two more things:

1) Costumes:
For the cast: The costume for this show is a white t-shirt and denim jeans. Don't worry about the t-shirts, we already have them in the same size you told us for your tie-dye shirt. There are a couple extras so if that size won't work let one of us know and we can try to get you one that will. To really figure this all out is our costume check on Monday. Everyone please bring a pair of jeans from home to try out. Pick a pair that you can do without for the next two weeks because we will be holding onto your costumes for the run of the show. If you do not have a pair, let us know A$AP and we will work something out. Do not wear your jeans to rehearsal tomorrow because, like I said, we will want to hold onto them.
For Jackson: You can come up with your own costume, just be sure to show it to us in advance and make it groovy.
For the crew: Wear as much black as you possibly can.

2) Cast Party:
This year's Shut Up! cast party will be an overnight at Raven's house directly after the final performance: Friday, 5/24 - Saturday Morning, 5/25. As with every cast party, the expectations are as follows: 1) Only the cast and crew of the show are invited, 2) No sex and no drugs - although some rock n' roll is permissible as long as it doesn't disturb Raven's neighbors - and 3) You're not required to have fun, but it would be cool if you did.
Both of Raven's parents will be present the whole time. Her phone number is 503-358-3324, her mom(Casi Chen)'s phone number is 503-927-2305 and her address is 5734 SW 53rd Ave. 97221, Portland, OR, USA (You got the whole thing there, Maddie)
No dinner will be served, but please bring a snack or a drink. Even if you can't stay the whole time, drop by for a little bit to celebrate lots and lots of hard work!

See you tomorrow! Bring jeans! Love you guys!

There are a few exceptions, but for the most part we would like you to be off book for every show at this point. This does not mean that you need to be completely memorized; you can still call for lines, but you should be able to put your script down while running shows. Excited to jump back in and work with you all again! See you Monday!
